System Data Unpacked
Also known as: SysDataMenu, macos-sysdata
Active · Website · Source repository
Free proprietary/source-available macOS app (window or menu bar, Swift 6) that itemizes the opaque 'System Data' bucket - simulator runtimes, Xcode symbol caches, package-manager stores, VM disks, the unified log, per-app data, AI coding-tool caches - explains every category and shows each command before it runs, and never deletes anything not explicitly clicked. ~50 categories over a whole-disk ring visualization, 9 languages, signed + notarized, Homebrew cask via own tap. Renamed from SysDataMenu at v1.0.5. 952 stars.

Mechanical checks derived from the fields above. Each row is one fact; "not yet checked" means exactly that, not a failure. There is no composite score; read them together.

Research notes
- License is an artifact: proprietary but source-published 'so that anyone can read them and see what the application does to their machine', and it explicitly bans use 'to train or fine-tune a machine learning model' - an anti-AI clause written for the slop era.
- 952 stars with no reddit launch found (arctic: zero posts by the author, zero 'sysdata' posts) - grew on GitHub/Homebrew/search, proof the cohort can win without a reddit blitz.
- Cleans the AI coding tools' own leftovers - Claude Code, Codex, Grok, Copilot, Kilo, Gemini caches and Claude's local VM bundles - cleaning the tools that write the cleaners.
- CHANGELOG openly lists 'the two [releases] that shipped a broken updater and what to do if you are on one of them' - candor the cohort usually lacks.
- Real release engineering: Developer-ID signed + notarized since 0.3.2, universal binary since 0.3.7, brew cask via own tap, daily update check.
- Not open source despite the public repo - 'free' here is accurate only as beer; the license forbids redistribution and derivative works.
