MIT open-source treemap disk space analyzer with review-first cleanup (DaisyDisk/WizTree/WinDirStat class) in TypeScript/Electron, shipped unsigned for macOS (arm64 dmg/zip), Windows (portable exe) and Linux (AppImage/tar.gz). Allocated-block sizes, symlinks not followed, macOS firmlink dedup; cleanup suggestions only pre-select things that rebuild themselves (old node_modules, git-ignored build output, Xcode/Gradle/npm/Homebrew/pip caches) while duplicates (byte-for-byte), old archives and logs are review-only and hidden/app-data/cloud-synced folders are never suggested. Trash with a 6-second undo; read-only MCP endpoint lets AI agents query disk usage. No telemetry.

r/coolgithubprojects — Bytescape: a fast, local treemap disk space analyzer with safe cleanup (macOS, Windows, Linux) by u/gold-fish-in-hell

Earliest author promotion found, two days after repo creation

r/electronjs — Built a disk space analyzer in Electron: what it took to keep the UI responsive over millions of files by u/gold-fish-in-hell

Kept as the source of the first-party engineering evidence in flags: libuv threadpool starvation from fs.promises (p95 87->148ms), worker_threads + sync fs, streamed NDJSON past V8 string limits, macOS firmlink dedup

r/linuxapps — Bytescape: a free, open-source treemap disk space analyzer (AppImage) by u/gold-fish-in-hell

Canonical pick: names the treemap analyzer class and the safe-cleanup model in one post.

Bytescape is a free and open-source (MIT) disk space analyzer, available as an AppImage or tar.gz for x64 Linux — Virtue
symlinks are not followed, so nothing is counted twice — Trust signal
Cleanup suggestions that only pre-select things that rebuild themselves (old node_modules, git-ignored build output, ~/.cache/pip and similar tool caches) — Trust signal
Runs locally, no accounts, no telemetry — Trust signal
